Meindl Piz Palu GTX

The Piz Palu is part of Meindl’s Alpine range and its benefits from Duratherm insulation to keep your feet warm on high Alpine peaks. The upper is a mix of leather and synthetic materials with a Gore-Tex waterproof lining, and this has good durability thanks to the rubber rand. The outsole is a very impressive Vibram unit with deep, well-spaced lugs and it is ideal for crunching through snow and ice either when mountaineering or crossing glaciers. There is a smooth area under the toe to improve grip on the rock when climbing. On the foot, this has in my view a typical Meindl feel of being slightly more spacious than some boots but very comfortable. The toe profile is not as close as more dedicated mountaineering boots but it still allows a reasonable precision on foot placement. The ankle cuff is quite high and very supportive, which is good for climbing, but not so good for walking when even those of us who like ankle support want some forward flex in the ankle area. It’s also a relatively heavy boot compared to others here, despite offering a similar range of performance and features.
